Hello! My name is Nicole - I am hoping to join the ship this summer in a long term status. I'm just looking for tips on what to bring and how life is on the ship. How consistent is the internet connection? How easy would it be for me to mail things to America? Are there services that allow me to print letters etc while on board? I'm so excited!!
Internet connection is pretty much consistent, it is by satellite. Not hardwired, so if there is some extreme weather conditions in the area where it 'connects' in Hollywood Florida then maybe it will go out for a few hours...or if the ship has some kind of technical glitch. Otherwise, it is fairly consistent. But don't expect to be able to video skype. But blogging with pictures should be fine.
Mailing letters to America is fairly easy, they have a 'post office' of sorts on board. If it is a bigger package find someone leaving to go back to the states and ask them (pretty please) to take it back with them THEN mail it for you.
Yes. There are services on board where you can print letters while you are on board.
Hoping for your acceptance as you apply to work with Mercy Ships!
Hello!! I am Kaleena! I am planning on coming to Sierra Leone to work as a General Steward in August! To be honest, I'm a bit nervous about the unexpected...some of my jitters are things like will I be the only "newbie"? I'd love to hear from somebody who is already there and will be there when I am or is going to be getting to the ship around the same time I do1 ;) Looking forward to coming/going!
Hello! I will be coming to the ship the beginning of November. I have training in June and then Gateway in September. I'm extremely excited and a little nervous - mainly I can't barely stand my excitement to get out there!! Feel free to find me on Facebook (Nicole Pribbernow) or look at my blog: mightykaleo.blogspot.com. Let me know if you have a blog so I can follow your first few months before I get there!
Hi there: I will be returning to the AFM next month and can't wait! My son spent a year on the ship, I spent 5 weeks in Benin the end of 2009 and will be going to Sierra Leone shortly. My husband will join me for the last 2 weeks of my time there. My blog address is http://sher919.wordpress.com/
Can't wait to be back and share the experience with my husband!
My family and I will be joining in January 2012. II will be the Crew Physician for at least 2 years - hopefully a lot more! Our blog:
